Standing at the Crossroads

How to discover your pathway forward

Decide on Both Direction and Destination

There are many times in our lives when we find ourselves at a crossroad. This may be because of age and stage or this may be because events have challenged the opportunities that we thought were possible.

Over the last few weeks I have been talking to several people where ‘the crossroad’ is their current reality and they are feeling paralysed and unable to know which road to take. This is a physically and mentally draining situation because we are forced to tread water rather than swimming with purpose towards all that we want for our lives. We can tread water for a while and it is actually helpful to help clear our thoughts, gain a sense of perspective and allow us to decide on both direction and destination however if we are unable to find this focus, we simply end up tired and all our energy simply goes towards surviving rather than thriving.

The contour of our landscape is constantly changing. Life events can re-write the narrative (the story of our own life) that some of us have been following. One of my clients has been working towards the uptake of an overseas posting. Everything they have striven for over the last 12 months has been directed towards an exciting ‘next’. The rules have now changed for her. Not only is there no job to go to, there is also no travel to get there! All she has striven for, planned for, hoped for is now ON HOLD.

How many of us have experienced this?
How did you feel and what did you need to do to move ahead?

Recognise the Things You Can Control

One of the challenges in this situation is to recognise the things that we can control. This is often a challenge in itself because the things that we WANT to control are often the things that we can’t! As we take ourselves back to our INTENTIONS and recognise what we want our lives to be about, it becomes easier to take the blinkers off, use our peripheral vision and start swimming TOWARDS a new direction.

What are INTENTIONS? My definition of intention is knowing what I want an area of my life to be about. It is not about the goal or action; it is creating higher thought around it. A good example of this is a health and fitness goal that I wanted to achieve. I thought that if I lost 5kgs by focusing on my nutrition and exercise that I would achieve a goal. While I realised that these actions would be helpful, as I examined what I most wanted to achieve, the weight loss would only go partway to achieving my intention. So, my intention became “I leap out of bed full of energy and enthusiasm”! What occurred with this as my intention was, I started to focus on cause not merely a single symptom. With my intention as the umbrella, I was able to work with several areas that were causing me to not feel at my best.

I created a goal around my nutrition, my exercise, my sleeping habits, my work/life balance and as I gained focus on each of these areas my goals collaboratively created the best outcome.

Discover Your Pathway Forward

Have a think about what your intentions are. Is there an umbrella purpose that sits above your goals and provides clarity towards what you intend to create in your life?
At this time and with all the challenges and changes that have occurred, taking time to create your INTENTIONS will allow you to focus forward in a changed landscape, controlling the things that you can and allowing you to protect, promote and preserve all that is important to you. Is it time to UNCOVER your unlimited potential, DISCOVER your pathway forward and RECOVER your sense of self? If so, let me know and I can help you create intentions and purpose around these.
